Biography
Van Tran is an experienced litigation and transactional attorney for over 16 years. His areas of practice include civil litigation, contracts, corporations, and administrative law. Additionally, Mr. Tran serves as legal counsel to many corporations and individual clients, providing insights on potential legislative issues and lobbying strategy. He has extensive knowledge of state and local government policies and regulations and how they affect the business community in California.
Mr. Tran served three terms in the California State Assembly, representing Central Orange County. Mr. Tran was the Vice-Chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary providing policy and budget oversight over the California courts and attorneys practicing in the state. He was also a member of the Utilities and Commerce, Banking and Finance, and Government Organization Committees. Additionally, Mr. Tran was Chairman of the Select Committee on International Trade.
In private practice for 10 years before heading to Sacramento (State Capital), Mr. Tran has supervised, represented, assisted, and/or advised approximately 900 clients and cases of various types and complexity. As the owner of a successful private practice, he has proven to be a capable legal administrator and business generator, whose reputation is highly regarded by his legal colleagues and the community at large.
Prior to serving full time in the California State Assembly, Mr. Tran was the principal of a successful three-attorney law firm in the City of Westminster. His areas of practice included civil litigation, criminal defense, contracts, corporations, real estate, and administrative law.
Leading up to his historic election as the first Vietnamese-American to serve in any state legislature in the United States, Mr. Tran was the focus of broad national media and public coverage. As a law maker from California, he was at one time the highest ranking Vietnamese-American elected official in the nation.
From 2000 to 2004, Mr. Tran was a councilman and vice-mayor of the City of Garden Grove, having garnered the highest number of votes in the history of the city’s council election. He was also a Garden Grove planning commissioner from 1999-2000. Mr. Tran is a charter member of the prestigious American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL), and a Delegate to the 2002 Young Leaders Conference, hosted by the American-Swiss Foundation. He has received numerous awards for his civic leadership and more than 20 years of community service.
Mr. Tran completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science at the University of California, Irvine, and went on to earn both a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and a Juris Doctorate from Hamline University School of Law in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
